More Than Oils - Our Typical Monthly Order!

I think it’s natural for people to assume that Young Living = only oils. You usually see the company shared mainly for our pure, therapeutic grade oils, like Thieves, Frankincense, Peppermint, and Lavender. In our home we use a LOT of oils. Each month we have a many oils in our monthly wellness box order (an optional program Young Living calls Essential Rewards) that we go through every month or two…but the truth is the majority of our monthly orders are a whole lot of OTHER things our family needs and uses on a routine basis. Young Living’s hallmark products are essential oils, but the heart of the company is getting harmful chemicals OUT of our homes, and giving us healthy and effective alternatives! We fell in love with Young Living for the oils, but have ordered, month after month, for years because I love that I can trust the ingredients this company puts in our products. I want to share some of those monthly household staples, aside from essential oils, that are in a typical monthly order for our family of seven!

First, alllll the household cleaning and homemaking staples - Thieves all the things! We love the Thieves Household Cleaner; it comes as a concentrate and makes 30 16oz spray bottle refills worth of cleaner, you can use it everywhere, and it smells lovely! Our laundry soap and dish soap are also staples in our monthly orders - you’d hardly believe the ridiculous in commercial and even “natural” labeled products like this. Optical brighteners, formaldehyde, other known endocrine, respiratory, and neurological disruptors . As a homemaker and mother, I don’t want my hands on those chemicals all day, nor do I want them on our plates or clothes!

We also get a lot of products that help keep our immune systems functioning and support overall wellness. We are on the natural side of taking care of our bodies, and that means a healthy diet and a proactive approach to giving our bodies what they need. Two supplements that truly impress me as a mama are the MightyPro and Unwind sticks. The MightyPro is the children’s probiotic, and they honestly taste like pixie stix! I used to struggle with opening probiotic capsules and hiding them in smoothies or apple sauce…but my kids request these daily. The Unwind is not one we use every day, but it’s an awesome blend of calming oils, magnesium, and l-theanine that is an awesome, effective, and safe way to help little ones settle their minds and fall asleep without affecting their normal hormone production!

We also keep a lot of Young Living’s supplements on our monthly order, and two are ones that every one of us (except the baby so far!) take daily. These are Ningxia Red and CBD! Ningxia is part of that proactive, take care of your body in advance approach. It’s the most power packed antioxidant nutrient we’ve found for daily use, and if you understand how important antioxidants are for fighting stress and how inflammation affects our overall wellness and immune function, you’ll know that Ningxia is a must! We love the sachet packets because they are easy to grab and I can trust that the children will at least have one per day, versus relying on me to pour it from the bottle for them! The other product we each use daily is the Nature’s Ultra CBD. With Type 1 Diabetes for my husband and Celiac for me, we are an “autoimmune family” over here. The research out there for supporting the endocannabinoid system with CBD is SO encouraging, and for the many benefits plus additional potential for assisting healthy immune responses and development for our autoimmune prone children, we keep CBD on board!

Likely our least glamorous staples, toiletries like toothpaste and bath gel, are frequently in our monthly orders. Five small heads to wash, and many, many little teeth to brush! Again, I love the simplicity of trusting that this company only includes the safest, plant-based ingredients combined with effective essential oils.

If this was all there was to it, effective and natural alternatives I can trust for reducing my family’s toxic chemical exposure as much as possible, I’d be a happy mama. 10 Oils to Add to Your Stash After the Starter Kit

So, you’ve got your kit - what next? A super common question is what oils to try in addition to your starter kit stash. I truly love the 12 oils in the premium starter kit; they are well balanced and cover a wide range of therapeutic uses! These next ten are ones that I think round out the range of uses really well, and will give you a ton of options for crafting dreamy diffuser blend scents.

Grapefruit - lovely in the diffuser on its own, perfect as a Vitality oil for adding to a glass of water, and a rockstar for pairing with different oils in the diffuser! Try it with Peppermint, pair it with Lavender, add it to Stress Away…it’s one of those oils that becomes a fast diffuser favorite.

Grounding - This is on my short list of personal favorites! It is a blend of white fir, black spruce, pine, ylang ylang, cedarwood, angelica, and juniper - a rich, woodsy aroma with a hint of floral. I reach for it to rub a few drops on my chest to help balance emotions and boost my mood. I love this one in the diffuser, alone or paired with a citrus like Orange or Bergamot!

Lime - Citrus oils are known for being the “happy oils” that boost and uplift mood, and lime has got to be the happiest. Such a fresh and cheery aroma for the diffuser and a staple for creating blends you love! Add in with Spearmint for a Mojito diffuser blend, grab Lime Vitality for salad dressing, guacamole, marinades, and drinks, and simply inhale between cupped hands for a bright refresh.

Endoflex - Endoflex and Endoflex Vitality are blended for supporting our body’s endocrine system, which is constantly taking a hit with the fast-paced, sleep-deprived, and packed modern lifestyle. For anyone looking to support fatigue and balance sleep, giving Endoflex a try should be on your list! Your thyroid will thank you for adding this one to your stash and to your daily routine.

Bergamot - The richest, earthiest of the citrus oils, Bergamot is one that I don’t think gets as much as it deserves! It instantly deepens any diffuser combination - try it with Thieves, Stress Away, Lavender, Frankincense - truly it goes well with most singles oils and blends! It is also a highly studied oil for anxiety and mood balance; if research is your thing, read some of the study abstracts on this oil. It has an impressive record for balancing mood and supporting anxiety.

Orange - You’ll reach for Orange Vitality for marinades, dressings, and to brighten up your drinks once you add this super inexpensive oil to your stash. Paired with Northern Lights Black Spruce is one of my top go to diffuser combinations, especially for hosting because it makes the house smell amazing! Orange with Lavender and Orange with Thieves are two other combinations that will keep Orange stocked in your oil stash. It’s a well known clarifier for skin, too - add a few drops to your nighttime serum or lotion. It’s also a favorite for adding to DIY cleaning recipes!

Owie - Part of the KidScents collection, but everyone needs this oil, regardless of whether or not there are kiddos in your home! However, if there are children in your house, this one will be on your monthly orders fairly frequently. With children, this one is perfect for scrapes, cuts, bonks, and bruises. In our house it’s the one that goes on right before the bandaid does! Without children in the house, this is still my top pick for skin irritations, cuts, scrapes, minor burns, redness, and skin sensitivity.

Cedarwood - An oil with nearly as much range as Lavender, and one of our most budget-friendly oils too! It is great for dry, irritated skin, known to promote hair growth, and helpful for clearing up blemishes. It’s got solid research behind it for being one of your main sleep support oils, whether you add it to the diffuser with Lavender and Peace & Calming, rub it on the bottoms of your feet, or put a single drop on your forehead before bed. Blended with Lavender and Vetiver, Cedarwood’s sedative properties make it a staple for helping jittery learners (or adults!) focus on the task at hand. The earthy, lightly woodsy scent makes it a great one to have in your stash for experimenting with diffuser blends! Try it with Lavender and Frankincense, Lemon and Rosemary, and Bergamot and Cypress.

Copaiba - Another one for the researchers, Copaiba gets to brag a lot of wonderful uses! It’s a must have for supporting muscle recovery and soothing sore muscles. Add it to an epsom salt bath and soak for at least 20 minutes, add it to your muscle rub blend, rub it directly on to sore neck and shoulders. Copaiba Vitality is a favorite for overall wellness, especially adding to tea or capsules to support digestion and the body’s natural reaction to physical stress. One of our favorite uses for Copaiba is during teething - we rub this one directly along the jawline or the gums!

Northern Lights Black Spruce - Once this one is in your stash, I will bet you that it lives near your diffuser! It’s a staple diffuser oil in our home. Similar to the relaxing, grounding effects of Frankincense, but the dreamiest, fresh, woodsy aroma that pairs well with nearly everything in the diffuser. The Anthro candle dupe uses NLBS (with Geranium, Orange, and Grapefruit). I love it with any of the citrus oils, but especially with Orange or Bergamot!

Rich, warm, cozy aromas are the key to diffusing in the fall. Balance your favorite conifer, spice, and citrus oils, and instead of spending money on seasonal candles, you’ll have endless combinations to choose from! Here are a few favorites to try!

DIY Rollers to Make with the Premium Starter Kit

The Young Living Premium Starter Kit is stocked with such an awesome range of oils, and is truly the most comprehensive way to dive in to using essential oils! With the twelve oils in the starter kit, there are ten DIY rollers you can make right away to have customized blends and favorite uses easily accessible and ready to toss into a bag to go with you anywhere.

First, grab some rollers on Amazon - these bamboo rollers are some of my favorites, and I like these glass with bamboo tops and frosted glass with wood grain tops too! You’ll also need a carrier oil. The V-6 blend from Young Living is definitely our favorite. Fractionated coconut oil and sweet almond oil are great options as well! Next, pick your dilution! These recipes are for a 25% dilution, effective yet moderate. You can easily double the amount of drops for a higher strength, or cut them in half for a lower strength.

Fall Spice and Christmas Tree Diffuser Blends

It seems like the minute Halloween is over, there are two sides for which season to usher in…savoring Fall, or ringing in the Christmas season as early as possible! I diffuse Christmas Spirit all year long, but we do our best to savor each season, between Fall and Thanksgiving, Advent, and Christmastide! Our tree goes up as an “Advent Tree” (wrapped in purple ribbon but not decorated otherwise) for Advent, so I’m ready for Christmas Tree blends in the diffuser by the end of November. We’ve been diffusing Young Living oils for nine years, so I have had plenty of time to try out different combinations in the diffuser, and have collected a wide stash of singles and blends. Below are two of my favorite seasonal combos, a Fall Spice blend and a Christmas Tree blend! I LOVE the simplicity of mixing the blends up in a 10ml dropper; using 6-10 drops for each bottle, you’ll have 9+ runs using either of these full recipes.

Fall Spice Blend:

DIY Luxe Facial Oil

I started using essential oils eight years ago for two main reasons - to save money through DIYs rather than store bought products, and to find truly effective, actually toxin-free alternatives to all the toxic products in our home we were looking to ditch. I grabbed my basic oils and made just about everything in our home, from cleaners to lotions, to hand soap, to chest rub, to body butter...I was happy to know each an every ingredient going into my family’s necessities, I knew the oils were effective, and I loved that I was paying a fraction of the cost of the items on store shelves because I was able to make bulk batches or use simple, inexpensive ingredients. The more children we’ve had, the less time I’ve made for DIYs, but the Dodge home is coming full circle lately with our homemade personal care and household necessities! I was diagnosed with Celiac in August of this year, and I’ve been learning that wheat/gluten/gliadin containing ingredients are used in *so many* things! It was a little overwhelming, and truly reminded me of how I felt when we began to about how toxic most conventional products are! I had a ready solution though, thankfully, which is just to go back to the basics - DIYs with effective, simple ingredients! 

This one is a tried and true recipe for me, with a new addition of Emu oil that makes it incredible! My skin has been loving this luxe, hydrating serum for the last month!

Need:  

• PUMP BOTTLE : I love the 2oz pump bottle I found on Amazon! I’ve done many, many essential oil DIYs in the past. If you stick your creations in hard to open jars, plastic tubes, complicated dropper bottles...you will *not* use what you created! A frosted glass container like this is so worth it, for the longevity of using your DIY facial serum.

• EMU + GRAPESEED + ARGAN OILS:  Each is wonderful for the skin for different reasons - hydrating dry skin and nourishing areas prone to wrinkles are two skin goals for me, and these oils fit those goals! Each of these is also very low or zero on the condomogenic potential. The emu oil is a new addition for me, based on research of finding a light, absorbable oil that matches closely to the make up of our own skin cells!

• YOUNG LIVING ESSENTIAL OILS: Again, years ago, researching the highest quality, most effective, and most pure ingredients for DIYs lead us to Young Living! There’s simply not a better pick out there. There are also SO many oils great for the skin. 

SKIN LOVING OILS: Frankincense, Lavender, Sacred Sandalwood, Rose, Roman Chamomile, Geranium, Manuka, Tea Tree, Neroli, Patchouli, Myrrh; use what you have, and start with the basics! Frankincense and Lavender are all time favorites, favored by both research and historical use!

Mix and melt down your oils - about 1/4 cup is perfect for a 2oz pump, but make it work for your container! You’ll use about 1/3 of each base oil, and despite what Pinterest says, you don’t have to measure everything perfectly with a scale to make your own products. ;-) Add 30 drops total of essential oils - I added Rose, Sacred Sandalwood, Roman Chamomile, Frankincense, and Lavender to this batch. Many of the oils I chose help with youthful processes like collagen production and brightening tone, which is where I am at with my 32 year old face! Simple as that, mix the oils and base serum together, and store in your container!

Christmas DIY Duo - Holiday Survival Blend & Christmas Morning Scrub

Over the weekend, I hosted a Holiday Open House for the newest products from the Young Living Holiday Catalog! We had a blast hanging out, tasting crazy yummy chocolate, and making two DIYs for the upcoming holidays! I have two new recipes to share - the Holiday Survival Blend roller, and a Christmas Morning coffee sugar scrub. Keep them for you, make them as Thanksgiving hostess gifts...can’t go wrong!

Holiday Survival Blend:

• Need: 10ml roller bottle (these are the ones we used!); Stress Away, Harmony, Present Time, and White Angelica essential oil blends. Reach out here to order them if you don’t have these yet; V-6 Carrier oil, liquid coconut oil, or grapeseed oil.

•Add five drops each to your roller: Stress Away, Harmony, Present Time, and White Angelica (these are all expertly blended for emotional support, grounding, and promoting healthy neurological pathways...let’s have healthy emotions and healthy brains during the holiday season, right?!) 

• Add about four full pumps of V-6 carrier oil blend, or using a pipette, fill with your favorite liquid carrier oil.

Emotional blends like this roll on are wonderful for helping reset mood and emotions, especially when your intention is to redirect negative thinking and get your neurological pathways away from former damaging patterns to create new, healthy ones. My tip: pick a healthy statement you can repeat to yourself and think it a few times as you roll this on and inhale the oils from the bottle!

Christmas Morning Scrub: 

• Need: Any jar of your choice, tall and wide work well for the layering; 1 cup sugar; 1 cup liquid coconut oil or melted coconut oil; coffee grounds (used and fully dried or fresh); Christmas Spirit essential oil blend. 

• In a mug or bowl, mix equal parts of oil and sugar depending on the needs of your jar size. Add five drops of Christmas Spirit.

• Layer your sugar scrub with layers of coffee grounds! 

Coffee scrubs are my favorite to make and use - search around online for how great coffee can be for our skin! This recipe is especially lovely, because you get that gorgeous Christmasy aroma with that comforting morning cup of coffee smell too! This one is a perfect Thanksgiving hostess gift, and also a simple, wonderful gift to make in bulk for all of the teachers, instructors, and neighbors on your gifting list! 

DIY Toxin-Free Dry Shampoo

One of the main reasons we started using essential oils almost eight years ago was to save money - we were learning about all the chemicals and toxins in our food, household products, and personal care items. We were beyond broke 24 year olds, with a baby, a brand new chiropractic office, and a mama who just left her full time teaching job to be home. Looking at all the “natural” alternatives on the store shelves, I was overwhelmed by prices and lists of chemical names. I ventured into making my own versions with inexpensive things I knew were safe and effective, and essential oils fit that bill! Dry shampoo is a mama life-saver. I love using it to give my pixie cut some texture, and it keeps my hair looking great between showers and washes. Unfortunately, conventional dry shampoo is packed with totally unnecessary toxins (check yours out on the Think Dirty app!) and adds an equally unnecessary expense to the personal care shopping list. DIY dry shampoo has been as staple for me, and I think you’ll love it too! The essential oils included are awesome for healthy scalp and hair. Happy mixing!

DIY Dry Shampoo:

1 8 oz mason jar

1 makeup jar with sifter

1/2 cup arrowroot powder

1 tbsp to 1/4 cup cacao powder or cocoa powder

4-6 drops each: Lavender, Rosemary, and Cedarwood  

 Mix arrowroot powder and oils in the 8oz mason jar, then add cacao powder one tablespoon at a time till the color is a good fit for your hair color. It doesn’t need to be dark! For blonde and lights brown hair, a tablespoon or two is plenty. 

Add some of your dry shampoo to a make up sifter jar (mine is this one from Amazon!) The sifter jar is not necessary, but having the lid to reduce how much powder comes out is totally worth it, and it’s reusable for every batch you make!

Another non-necessity, but totally fun - label your dry shampoo with a retro embossing label maker! 

Manfoliant: Sugar + Coffee Scrub for Men

Super common question - how do I get my husband using essential oils regularly? What oils to start with, how to get him to apply them, what Shutran or Mister smell like...the thing is, most men are hesitant to shake up their routine! Even the most wellness-oriented husband may hold off on trying new things.

I always recommend a few of my husbands all-time favorites for men; he loves a LOT of Young Living products, but narrowing it to oils specifically helpful for men, he loves Endoflex, EnRGee, Idaho Blue Spruce, Northern Lights Black Spruce, Valor, Frankincense, Deep Relief, Mister, Shutran, and Goldenrod. Again, he uses plenty of others, but these are ones that he uses quite regularly! 

One of my favorite ways to help him keep these oils in his routine is to make what we jokingly call "manfoliant" - because "sugar scrub" does not sound like something a man should be using! Ha! He uses this coffee + sugar scrub in the shower to keep his skin healthy and apply an extra dose of these favorite oils! He especially appreciates it after a workout. The recipe includes Goldenrod, Shutran, Mister, and Eucalyptus Globulus.  

DIY Scrub for Men:

• 1 8oz jar

• 1/2 cup V-6 or liquid coconut oil 

• 1/2 cup white granulated sugar

• 1/2 cup dried coffee grounds (used or fresh)

• 10 drops of each: Shutran, Mister, Goldenrod

• 5 drops Eucalyptus Globulus

Blend ingredients and essential oils in a bowl, adding extra V-6 or liquid coconut oil as needed to reach your preferred consistency. Transfer to an airtight 8oz container and keep in/near the shower!

Bouquet Roller Recipe: Toxin-Free Perfume DIY

Sharing one of my favorite DIY roller blends of all time, the bouquet roller. This blend smells absolutely amazing (think: your new favorite perfume!) and has four extraordinary, powerful, valuable oils. Three of the oils included are the very *top* oils for glowing skin, so this precious roller doubles as a beauty serum too! 

The awesomeness in this blend:

R O S E - one of the highest frequency oils in existence, known widely for promoting happiness and is amazing for skin!

N E R O L I - stress-crushing, wonderful for complexion, and one of the most gorgeous scents on the planet!

S A C R E D   S A N D A L W O O D - known for promoting relaxation, improving mental clarity, and boosting memory! Sandalwood increases collagen production, helping with skin elasticity and wrinkles!

J A S M I N E - boosts energy and mood, supports healthy libido, and improves concentration.

B O U Q U E T   R O L L E R   R E C I P E:

4 drops Rose essential oil

4 drops Neroli essential oil

4 drops Sacred Sandalwood essential oil

1 drop Jasmine essential oil

Young Living V-6 Carrier Oil, sweet almond oil, or fractionated coconut oil

In a 10ml roll on (I love these from Root & Petal!), add your Rose, Neroli, Sacred Sandalwood, and Jasmine essential oils. Using the pump bottle of V-6, fill the roller with carrier. Add roller ball and secure it in place by twisting the cap all the way down. Shake your blend and it is ready to use!

DIY All Purpose & Tattoo Balm

Anyone else get their first tattoos in their 30s? I had mine done on my 30th birthday, which shares the date of the Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The Angelus prayer is one of my favorites, and I love having the frequent reminder to do my best to give my "fiat" to God's Holy Will in each moment of my life. My husband is in the middle of getting his first tattoo - his is much more extensive and has required a couple of sessions! This week he'll (hopefully) finish the last session, which is why we needed to make up a batch of our favorite all-purpose balm! Both of us have used this balm for our tattoo healing, since we wanted to skip the petroleum-based products and make sure we had awesome oils to help us too. I initially tested out and created this balm recipe for a hand balm a few years ago - paired with Frankincense, Myrrh, and Tea Tree, it's a seriously awesome winter hand balm! My husband keeps a jar at the office because he washes his hands so frequently every day. It makes a perfect holiday DIY gift too! For our tattoo balm, we make the balm base and add Helichrysum, Frankincense, and Lavender. This batch is all set and ready for my husband's St. Michael tattoo! 

All Purpose Balm Recipe:

• 1/3 cup Coconut Oil

• 1/3 cup Unrefined Shea Butter

• 1/3 cup Beeswax Pellets

• 1/3 cup Sweet Almond Oil

Tattoo Balm Oils:

• 15 drops Helichrysum, 15 drops Lavender, 10 drops Frankincense

In a double boiler, melt coconut oil, shea butter, beeswax pellets, and almond oil together until fully melted. Cool in the refrigerator for 20-30 minutes; balm should be thickening but still able to be stirred (see photo below). Add essential oils and mix well. Transfer to an 8oz air-tight container.
